Course Description:
This course addresses several of the major ethical and policy
issues that are changing the way educators think about new information
and communication technologies in the classroom setting. Specifically,
the course was designed to help educators meet MTTS - Standard
III. Legal, Social and Ethical Issues: Demonstrate an understanding
of the legal, social and ethical issues related to technology use.(ISTE
NETS*T standard VI. Social, Ethical, Legal and Human Issues).
This course will cover three broad categories Cybersafety, Cyberethics
and Cybersecurity (C3) and how they are interrelated, providing
the opportunity for vigorous discussion and exploration of the
complex issues involved in C3 technology policy in the educational
setting. Participants will hear from a number of information technology
experts and explore a variety of topics including Netiquette, Acceptable
Use of Computing Resources, Electronic Cheating, High-Tech Hate
Speech, Intellectual Property, Copyright, Privacy and Security,
and current Federal and State Regulations. Through a variety of
case studies and group work, detailing IT issues, recent case law,
position papers, original articles and resources, as well as scenarios
for discussion educators will give consideration to responses that
can be applied in their own settings.
Previous Student Comments
Overall, I feel that I was exposed to some great topics and
certainly will walk away with a greater appreciation for technology
issues, security, ethics, and legal implications. This is exactly
what I had registered for the course to get...so thank you!
What I came away with was an understanding of just how many
issues there are and just how complex those issues are. I think
certain subjects were powerful and will be hard to forget. The
topic of
cyberbullying is one that will stay with me for a long time.
I think the course did a good job covering material relating
to the classroom setting, as well as everyday cyber awareness.
It gave me a take on the amount of information that I knew about…as
well as many cites to use to help myself learn more, and educate
those I’m responsible for.
Overall, the C3 course was an exemplary learning experience
for me. I highly recommend this course to all educators and students.
I learned an enormous amount in this class and I'm very glad
I got to take it! Not only will I be able to apply the knowledge
to my own personal setting, but I will feel more comfortable
modeling to my students in the classroom.
