A consortium of Washington-area organizations led by Prince Georges Community College and including five community colleges, the University of Maryland and four other universities, several regional high schools, government agencies and businesses, has been awarded a $3 million grant over four years from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant will support a project entitled "CyberWATCH (Cybersecurity: Washington Area Technician and Consortium Headquarters)" to establish and operate a Regional Center in cybersecurity from 2005 through 2009. This is the only center located on the East Coast.

The University of Maryland will take the K-12 lead in the CyberWATCH initiative. This will include professional development for educators through the annual Cyberethics, Cybersafety, & Cybersecurity (C3) Conference, and a series of guidance counselor workshops throughout Maryland, the District of Columbia and northern Virginia. A three week residential program will be offered to rising junior and high school students via the Young Scholars Program: Students, Learning and Technology, and an after school enrichment program will be developed specifically focusing on helping girls understand the plethora of career opportunities in the cybersecurity field. Davina Pruitt-Mentle, Director of Education Technology Outreach at the College of Education serves as the University PI and will coordinator the K-12 efforts. [Press Release]

   Cool Careers in Cybersecurity - Workshops [Press Release ... PDF]
University of Maryland will host the first in a series of Cool Careers in Cybersecurity Workshops which will provide information and skills necessary to navigate the professional pipeline in the vast fields of Cybersecurity and Information Assurance as well as other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The first workshop will be held Friday April 21, 2006 focusing on Cool Careers in Cybersecurity for Girls. The workshop will provide participants with a full day of speakers, hands-on activities and campus site visits. 30 middle school girls will have the opportunity to learn from women from companies and agencies throughout the state about what it takes to be a true success in the field.    Cyberethics, Cybersafety and Cybersecurity Conference (C3) - 2006 Pictures - 2007 Pictures

The Annual C3 Conference informs the educational community about the ethical, legal, safety, and security implications of technology use. Participants will hear from a number of National information and assurance technology experts on topics including Netiquette, Acceptable Use of Computing Resources, Viruses, Hoaxes and Trojan Horses, Backing up, Anti- Virus protection and Firewalls, Intellectual Property, Privacy, and Security. Through a variety of case studies and group work, educators will give consideration to responses that can be applied in their own settings. [More]

 
  School Counselor Workshop on Information Assurance/Information Security/Digital Forensics Career Preparation and Opportunity Workshop

One day workshop introduces counselors to IA/IS, Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics career opportunities, and choices within these categories, as well as the multiple pathways to enter the workforce in these areas. Industry employers speak to participants about career opportunities, student internships, externships and other related opportunities.

School counselors learn about current and future career trends in IA/IS, receive updates and current promotional materials for distribution to interested students and parents, and discover how to use the CyberWATCH Regional Center Web site to find answers to questions from parents, students, and other educators.
