Bringing Your Own Device (BYOD) to School or Work - [PPT]

Rochelle Eisenberg, Esq. Maryland Local School Board Attorneys Association

Doreen Heath, Montgomery County Public Schools

Larry Wong, CyberSafety Program Manager, Montgomery County Public Schools

As more and more people own and use mobile technology devices, exploring the options for staff and students to bring these devices to school or work for educational uses becomes a reality.  The Maryland Instructional Technology Advisory Council Report Investing in Instructional Technology: Accelerating Educational Reform in Maryland, published in June, 2011 notes that “Every student should have an Internet-enabled computing device with sufficient functionality to be used for instruction, assessment, and access to appropriate digital content.”  BYOD also presents many issues including equity, safe and secure access to the internet, compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Action (CIPA), and access to school system networks and applications.  Considerations facing educational technology leaders include: identifying the issues, establishing policies and procedures for the responsible use of personal devices in instruction and for educational purposes, filtering Internet content through required technology protection measures, and managing software licenses.

This session provides insight into the issues, the legal implications, and what you can do to move forward with this exciting opportunity while making responsible and informed decisions.
