Internet Safety Education for Youth: Using Research to Build Better Programs

Lisa Jones, Crimes Against Children Research Center (CCRC), University of New Hampshire

 

Dr. Jones will discuss recent data on the rates and risk markers of problematic online youth behavior and experiences.  Research from the Crimes Against Children Research Center (CCRC) at the University of New Hampshire on cyberbullying, “sexting”, and other problematic Internet experiences will be summarized. The implications for Internet safety education will be highlighted, focusing in particular on the importance of combining current Internet safety research with existing knowledge on effective prevention and youth education.

Safe Blogging

Students at Thurmont Elementary School are using blogging as an instructional tool on a daily/weekly basis. In order to facilitate students online in a safe manner, teachers were trained on how to create a secure blog that greatly improves the confidentiality of student work and information. Participants in this session will see how the "secure" blog is set up and how teachers use this Web 2.0 tool in the classroom.
