FRACTIONS LESSON PLAN
Materials:
Procedure:
1. Warm-up: Ask
students if they enjoy eating pizza. How
much pizza do they eat? What does it mean to
eat ½ a pizza? What is the definition of a
fraction?
2. Motivate the
Lesson: Bring in a glass container that
contains 30 gumballs of various solid
colors. Count the number of each
color. Create a fraction to represent the
amount of each color. Explain that fractions
are “part” of a “whole”
3. Proceed through the
lesson with the “Question of the Day”.
4. Verify that students can
identify the numerator and denominator. Quiz
them verbally using several examples. Take
extra time to focus on finding the lowest common
denominator.
* Stress that you add the
numerators while the denominators stay the
same. This is a very common
mistake.
5. Have students
complete the “How
to Add Fractions ” Worksheet for homework.
